This itinerary is carefully planned, but minor adjustments may be made due to weather, local festivals, road conditions or your personal interests to ensure the best possible experience.

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Addis Ababa

Welcome to Abyssinia, the Land of Origins! Upon arrival, you will be welcomed and transferred in a modern, air-conditioned vehicle to your 3- or 4-star accommodation in the heart of Addis Ababa. Begin your city tour with a visit to the National Museum of Ethiopia, home to the famous fossil "Lucy" and an impressive collection showcasing Ethiopia’s ancient history and cultural heritage. Continue to the Ethnological Museum, located within the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie and surrounded by the beautiful gardens and fountains of Addis Ababa University. Even if you are not usually a museum enthusiast, this fascinating museum is well worth a visit and is considered one of the finest museums in Africa. Before lunch, visit Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of Addis Ababa’s most important religious landmarks, known for its unique architectural style and historical significance. After a relaxing lunch, drive to the Entoto Mountains, the best location to enjoy panoramic views of the capital. Entoto is also an important historical site where Emperor Menelik II lived and established his palace before the foundation of modern Addis Ababa. Overnight: Best Western Premier Dynasty, Addis Ababa.

  2. Day 2

Fly to Dire Dawa and Visit Harar

Take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa. Upon arrival, begin the drive to Harar, passing through Awaday, the center of Ethiopia’s famous khat trade. Native to the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, khat is a leafy plant traditionally used for its mild stimulant effects. Continue your journey to Harar, one of Ethiopia’s most historic cities and considered the fourth holiest city in the Islamic world after Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem. Upon arrival, explore the city’s lively streets, narrow alleyways, and unique architectural heritage. Harar is home to more than 180 mosques and shrines, including several ancient sites dating back centuries. In the evening, experience one of Harar’s most unique traditions by meeting the famous Hyena Men of Harar. This remarkable tradition, passed down from generation to generation, involves feeding wild hyenas by hand. Every night, these animals come close to the city in search of food, creating an unforgettable cultural experience. Overnight: Grand Gato Hotel, Harar.

  3. Day 3

Explore the Cultural Heritage of Harar

Today, continue exploring the unique cultural heritage of Harar, starting with a visit to a traditional Harari home. The distinctive houses of Harar are among the city’s most remarkable features. Entered through beautifully carved doors, these homes showcase exceptional interior designs centered around a living room decorated with colorful traditional baskets and various household items. Continue to the Harari City Museum, located in a historic balconied mansion where Emperor Haile Selassie spent part of his childhood. The museum houses a fascinating collection of historical artifacts, including ancient Islamic manuscripts, Harari coins dating back more than 200 years, traditional clothing, and old musical instruments. Instead, we will visit the Mursi community near Key Afer, where you will have the opportunity to learn about their unique culture and traditions. The Mursi are one of Ethiopia’s most distinctive ethnic groups. They live in traditional huts made from natural materials such as straw and leaves. Mursi women are well known for wearing clay lip plates and decorative ornaments in their stretched lower lips and earlobes. The Mursi men are also recognized for their traditional hairstyles, body scarification, and cultural practices. The size of the lip plate has traditionally been associated with beauty and social value among women. Continue your journey to Turmi, home of the Hamer people. Visit a Hamer village and experience their unique way of life. The Hamer are known for their beautiful body decorations, colorful beads, bracelets, and traditional hairstyles. They are also famous for their traditional Evangadi (moonlight) dance and the bull-jumping ceremony, an important rite of passage marking the transition from childhood to adulthood. Overnight: Paradise Lodge, Turmi.

  9. Day 9

The city’s unique architecture reflects a blend of Ethiopian, Portuguese, and Indian influences. Visit the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, including Fasilides’ Palace, one of the oldest and most impressive castles in the complex, built in 1632.
