Day by Day

Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

This itinerary is carefully planned, but minor adjustments may be made due to weather, local festivals, road conditions or your personal interests to ensure the best possible experience.

  1. Day 1

Arrival in Addis Ababa and City Tour

Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, you will be welcomed by your representative from Extraordinary Ethiopia Tours and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, begin exploring Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital and an important political and cultural centre. Visit the National Museum of Ethiopia, home to remarkable archaeological discoveries including the famous fossil of Lucy, which provides valuable insight into human evolution. Continue to Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of the city’s most important religious landmarks, renowned for its architecture and historical significance. If time permits, drive to Mount Entoto for panoramic views of Addis Ababa and the story of the city’s early history. You may also visit a traditional market or take part in an Ethiopian coffee ceremony to experience the country’s renowned hospitality and rich coffee culture. Overnight: Hotel in Addis Ababa.

  2. Day 2

Fly to Lalibela and Explore the Rock-Hewn Churches

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your domestic flight to Lalibela. On arrival, meet your local guide and begin exploring the extraordinary rock-hewn churches that have made Lalibela one of Ethiopia’s most important historical and religious destinations. Visit the northwestern church complex, including Bete Medhane Alem, one of the largest rock-hewn churches in the world, and Bete Maryam, known for its religious significance and architectural details. Explore the interconnected passageways, courtyards and tunnels linking the churches while your guide explains their construction, spiritual importance and association with King Lalibela. Lalibela remains an important pilgrimage destination for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, and its churches are still active places of worship; depending on the day’s religious activities, you may observe local worshippers and traditional ceremonies. Overnight: Hotel in Lalibela.

  3. Day 3

Bete Giyorgis and Flight to Addis Ababa

After breakfast, continue exploring Lalibela’s remarkable rock-hewn churches. Visit Bete Giyorgis, the iconic cross-shaped Church of Saint George, carved deep into the rock and widely regarded as one of Ethiopia’s most impressive architectural achievements. Continue to other churches in the southeastern cluster, learning about their distinctive architectural features and their importance in Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. After completing your visits, transfer to Lalibela Airport for your flight to Addis Ababa, where your driver will meet you and take you to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day relaxing and preparing for the Danakil Depression; depending on your flight schedule, there may be time for dinner or to explore the capital before the early start the following morning. Overnight: Hotel in Addis Ababa.

  4. Day 4

Fly to Semera and Drive to Erta Ale Volcano

Driving: about 250 km, 5 to 6 hours; hiking: about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on conditions. Take an early morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, the capital of Ethiopia’s Afar Region. At Semera Airport you will be welcomed by our experienced local team, including professional 4WD drivers, local guides, a cook and a tour leader; security arrangements and any required permits are confirmed before departure. After breakfast and preparations, drive across the dramatic Afar Desert toward Erta Ale Volcano, through arid plains, volcanic rock and rugged desert terrain. At the camping area near the volcano, rest and prepare for the evening hike. In the late afternoon, usually around 5:30 PM, begin the approximately one-hour trek toward the summit, subject to local conditions and your guide’s instructions. Erta Ale is one of Ethiopia’s most remarkable shield volcanoes, famous for its dramatic caldera and historically active lava lake; volcanic activity changes, so the appearance of the crater and any visible lava depend on current conditions. From the summit, enjoy views of the crater, the rugged lava fields and a landscape shaped by centuries of volcanic activity, then return to the campsite for dinner prepared by your expedition team and a night beneath the stars, with mattresses, pillows and bedding provided. Overnight: Camping near Erta Ale Volcano.

  5. Day 5

Erta Ale, Lake Afdera and Lake Assale

Driving: about 300 km, 6 to 7 hours; walking: about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on stops and conditions. Wake around 5:00 AM to enjoy sunrise over the volcanic landscape, then return to the campsite for breakfast. Pack up and drive to Lake Afdera, a salt lake in the heart of the Danakil Depression surrounded by rugged mountains and desert scenery, known for its salt production and its importance to local livelihoods. Stop to take in the landscape and learn about the region’s traditional salt industry; swimming should only be considered where local conditions and safety guidance permit. Continue to Hamed Ela, the settlement commonly used as a base for exploring Dallol and the salt plains. In the late afternoon, visit Lake Assale, also known as Lake Karum, to admire the expansive salt flats and the changing colours of the desert at sunset: the vast white salt crusts and open horizon make an extraordinary setting for photography. Overnight: Camping or basic accommodation in the Hamed Ela area.

  6. Day 6

Dallol, Lake Assale and Return to Addis Ababa

Driving: about 300 km from Hamed Ela to Semera, 6 to 7 hours; walking: about 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on conditions. Rise early to watch sunrise over the salt flats of Lake Assale, then continue to Dallol, one of the world’s most extraordinary geothermal landscapes. With your local guide, explore its colourful mineral deposits, salt formations and sulphur-rich terrain in shades of yellow, green, orange and white, keeping to authorised routes and following all safety instructions, as some areas are hot, acidic or otherwise hazardous. Cross the salt plains and, where accessible, visit areas of traditional salt extraction to learn about the Afar people’s long-standing practice of cutting salt blocks by hand and carrying them by camel caravan across the desert. Drive back to Semera Airport for your flight to Addis Ababa, then transfer to your hotel for a short rest and shower, subject to the timing of your international departure. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant with local dishes, music and hospitality before your transfer to Bole International Airport, provided your flight schedule allows. What to bring for the Danakil Depression: a headlamp or torch, a small daypack for the Erta Ale hike, sturdy closed hiking shoes, sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat), a light jacket for the cooler night and early morning, personal toiletries and tissues, a reusable water bottle, personal medication and basic first-aid items, a sleeping bag, pillow or blanket (these may be provided; please confirm before departure), and a camera with spare batteries, as charging is limited.

“My tour operator was very communicative even before the trip began and very responsive on WhatsApp. He booked all my domestic flights and arranged all my airport pick-ups and drop-offs. He had professional guides in all the regions I visited, the itinerary was clear, and he was flexible with any changes. There were no extra costs. He is reliable, communicative and well experienced. I will be back with the same company.”

“Excellent services provided by Maereg and his team. The local guides and the drivers – Geta (my fave) – were all great. They were patient, professional, knowledgeable and took great care of us. Everything was seamlessly coordinated and they were always on time for pickups and made sure we were briefed in advance of the itinerary and any changes. One of my top travel destinations in Africa, with some of the kindest and warmest people. Maereg went above and beyond! First-class service, always with a smile!”
