Omo Valley tribes explained: a guide to Ethiopia’s living cultures
Hamar, Mursi, Karo, Dassanech, Ari, Banna and Nyangatom: who lives in the Omo Valley, and how to visit respectfully.

Living Cultures · Southern Ethiopia & Omo Valley
The lower Omo is one of the most culturally diverse regions on earth, home to the Hamar, Mursi, Karo, Dassanech and many more, each with its own language, dress and ceremonies.
Why We Go
The Omo River flows south through some of Africa’s most remote country before reaching Lake Turkana. Its lower valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its fossil discoveries, is home to more than a dozen communities representing several language families, from the Hamar and Banna to the Mursi, Karo, Arbore, Dassanech and Nyangatom.
Many still live by cattle herding and riverside farming, and traditions such as body painting, scarification, lip plates and the Hamar bull jump remain central to identity. Gateway towns such as Arba Minch, Jinka and Turmi make it possible to combine village visits with Lake Chamo, the Dorze highlands and the stone-walled villages of Konso.
We travel the Omo with local guides from the communities we visit, plan around market days and ceremonies, and ask before every photograph, so that conversation, not the camera, leads.
