Why We Go
Green hills, coffee gardens and Sidama culture in the quiet countryside south of Hawassa.
Unlike Ethiopia’s more famous historical destinations, Yirga Alem is known for its peaceful countryside, agricultural heritage and connection to the country’s rich coffee culture. Small farms grow coffee alongside enset, fruit trees and other crops, creating a distinctive agricultural landscape.
Local farmers cultivate Arabica coffee in small garden plots, often beneath the shade of trees. Visitors can learn about coffee cultivation, harvesting and traditional preparation, and a traditional coffee ceremony offers insight into the hospitality and social customs that make coffee such an important part of everyday life.
Yirga Alem is a window into the culture of the Sidama people, whose traditions are closely connected to agriculture and community life. Enset, commonly known as false banana, is particularly important: its processed products are a staple of the local diet, and the plant also provides materials used in everyday life. Local markets and rural settlements showcase the region’s produce, traditional foods and handicrafts.
The countryside features rolling hills, lush vegetation, cultivated fields and scattered settlements, a pleasant contrast to Ethiopia’s drier lowlands, with opportunities for nature walks and photography. The area is also known for Aregash Lodge, set among the greenery in traditional-style huts.
South of Hawassa, Yirga Alem is a gateway to the wider Sidama region and the Gedeo highlands beyond. For visitors seeking a quieter, more intimate experience of Ethiopia, it reveals the close connections between coffee, agriculture, culture and the natural environment.
