Why We Go
More than 120 rock-hewn churches, some reached only by climbing a cliff.
More than 120 rock-hewn churches are recorded in Tigray, dating from roughly the 4th to the 15th century, many older than Lalibela’s. Most are clustered around the Gheralta mountains northwest of Mekelle, where the views across the Hawzen plain are as memorable as the art.
Abuna Yemata Guh requires a near-vertical scramble with a short section of bare rock and a narrow ledge high above the valley; inside, its domed ceiling is painted with saints and apostles. Debre Damo, founded by Abune Aregawi in the 6th century, is reached by a leather rope and is open to men only. Easier visits include Abreha we Atsbeha and Wukro Cherkos.
