Why We Go
Ethiopia’s oldest standing building: a 2,500-year-old temple near Axum.
Less than two hours’ drive from Axum, Yeha was a centre of the pre-Aksumite kingdom of D’mt. Its Great Temple, a single roofless chamber about 20 metres long, has walls some 10 metres high built from smoothly polished stone blocks, some more than three metres long, fitted together without mortar.
Beside the ruins, the monastery of Abba Afse, one of the Nine Saints, preserves manuscripts and religious treasures. It is an essential stop for anyone interested in the origins of Ethiopian civilisation.
Highlights
- The Great Temple of Yeha, built around the 7th to 5th century BC
- Polished stone blocks laid without mortar
- The monastery of Abba Afse and its manuscripts
- A scenic highland drive from Axum
