Why We Go

The Camelot of Africa: castles, baths and painted ceilings of a highland empire.

Founded by Emperor Fasilides in 1636, Gondar was the seat of Ethiopia’s emperors for more than two centuries. The Royal Enclosure contains castles and palaces built between 1635 and 1855, architecture unlike anything else in Africa, blending Aksumite traditions with Arabian, Indian and European influences. It was inscribed by UNESCO in 1979.

Beyond the enclosure lie the palace of Ras Bet, the bath of Fasilides, the ruins of Kuskuam and the church of Debre Berhan Selassie, whose ceiling of painted cherubs is one of the most photographed images in Ethiopia. Gondar pairs naturally with the Simien Mountains and is the finest place in the country to celebrate Timkat.

Highlights

  • The Fasil Ghebbi royal enclosure, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Debre Berhan Selassie and its ceiling of winged angel faces
  • Fasilides’ Bath, flooded for the Timkat celebrations
  • The ruined palace of Empress Mentewab at Kuskuam
