Day by Day
Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary
This itinerary is carefully planned, but minor adjustments may be made due to weather, local festivals, road conditions or your personal interests to ensure the best possible experience.
Day 1
Arrival in Addis Ababa – City Tour
Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, you will be welcomed by your Extraordinary Ethiopia Tours representative and transferred to your hotel. After time to freshen up and relax, begin a gently paced city tour that includes the National Museum, home to the fossil remains of Lucy, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Entoto Hill with its views over the city, and Merkato, one of Africa’s largest open-air markets. You will also experience a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, an important part of Ethiopian culture and hospitality. Overnight: Lobelia Hotel, Addis Ababa.
Day 2
Fly Addis Ababa – Mekelle – Hawzen – Abuna Yemata Guh
Early in the morning, fly from Addis Ababa to Mekelle, the capital of Tigray. Meet your private driver and guide and drive toward Hawzen through the spectacular landscapes of the Gheralta Mountains. After checking in, continue to Abuna Yemata Guh, one of Ethiopia’s most extraordinary rock-hewn churches, dramatically positioned high on a cliff and famous for its ancient paintings and mountain setting. Reaching the church requires a hike with some challenging, exposed sections, so a reasonable level of fitness and comfort with heights is recommended. If time permits, also visit Maryam Korkor, an impressive church on a high plateau with magnificent views. Overnight: Vision Hotel, Hawzen.
Day 3
Hawzen – Danakil Depression – Erta Ale
After breakfast, depart Hawzen and drive toward the Danakil Depression. You will be warmly welcomed by our experienced team, including skilled 4WD drivers, a professional cook, local guides, and an official tour leader from the Tourism Authority. A police escort will accompany the expedition, and all camping equipment will be prepared before departure. Begin the scenic drive across the dramatic Afar Desert toward Erta Ale Volcano. Upon arrival, continue to the camping area located on the rim of the caldera. In the late afternoon, at around 5:30 PM, start the approximately one-hour hike to the summit. Although the famous lava lake is currently inactive, Erta Ale remains one of the world’s most fascinating shield volcanoes. From the summit, enjoy breathtaking views of the volcanic crater, rugged lava fields, and the unique geological landscape created by centuries of volcanic activity. After spending time exploring and taking photographs, return to the campsite at around 8:00 PM. Spend the night camping under the stars in a peaceful open-air setting, with comfortable mattresses, pillows, clean bed linens, and all essential camping facilities provided. Overnight: Dodom, Camping.
Day 4
Erta Ale – Lake Afdera – Hamed Ela
Wake up early, around 5:00 AM, to witness a spectacular sunrise over the volcanic landscape before returning to the campsite for breakfast. After breakfast, drive to Lake Afdera, a beautiful saltwater lake in the heart of the Danakil Depression. Surrounded by dramatic desert scenery, the lake offers a refreshing opportunity to swim in its warm, mineral-rich waters. Continue to Hamed Ela, the gateway to Dallol, where you will set up camp for the night. In the late afternoon, visit Lake Assale (Karum Lake) to admire the breathtaking sunset over the vast salt flats, one of the most unforgettable views in the Danakil Depression. Overnight in an open-air campsite with comfortable mattresses, pillows, clean bed linens, and ample drinking water. Overnight: Hamed Ela, Camping.
Day 5
Dallol – Semera – Fly to Addis Ababa
Wake up early and drive to Lake Assale (Lake Karum) to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the vast salt flats of the Danakil Depression. After sunrise, continue to Dallol, one of the most extraordinary geothermal landscapes on Earth. Explore its colourful hydrothermal fields, bubbling hot springs, mineral terraces, and vibrant sulphur deposits, whose shades of yellow, green, orange, and white create a surreal landscape unlike anywhere else in the world. Next, drive to the salt and mud formations beneath the Dallol crater and enjoy a picnic breakfast surrounded by this spectacular scenery. Continue across the endless salt plains of Lake Karum, where you can relax in a natural saltwater pool before visiting the local Afar salt miners. Learn about their centuries-old tradition of cutting salt blocks by hand and carrying them by camel caravan across the desert, a practice that has remained largely unchanged for generations. In the afternoon, depart Hamed Ela and drive to Semera Airport for your late afternoon flight to Addis Ababa. Overnight: Lobelia Hotel, Addis Ababa.
Day 6
Fly Addis Ababa – Lalibela – First Group of Churches
After breakfast, fly from Addis Ababa to Lalibela, renowned for its extraordinary medieval churches carved directly from solid volcanic rock. After check-in, begin exploring the first group of churches. Among the highlights is Bete Maryam, one of the most beautiful and architecturally impressive churches in Lalibela, together with the surrounding courtyards, tunnels and passageways carved into the rock. Your guide will introduce you to the history, religious traditions and architecture of these remarkable monuments. Overnight: Amba Lodge, Lalibela.
Day 7
Lalibela – Fly to Addis Ababa
After breakfast, continue exploring the second group of Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches, including the iconic Church of St. George (Bete Giyorgis), one of Ethiopia’s most remarkable architectural and religious landmarks. Afterwards, return to the hotel for check-out and transfer to Lalibela Airport for your flight to Addis Ababa, where you can enjoy a relaxing evening at leisure. Overnight: Lobelia Hotel, Addis Ababa.
Day 8
Fly Addis Ababa – Arba Minch – Lake Chamo – Turmi
Wake up early for your morning flight to Arba Minch. On arrival, meet your guide and drive to Lake Chamo for a boat excursion, where you may see large Nile crocodiles, hippos and a variety of bird species. After lunch in Arba Minch, continue south to Turmi, the heart of the Hamer people’s territory, and relax at your lodge after the long journey. Overnight: Buska Lodge, Turmi.
Day 9
Turmi – Karo – Dimeka Saturday Market – Hamer Village
Start early and drive to the Karo area. The Karo are one of the smaller ethnic groups of the Omo Valley, known for their distinctive body painting, scarification and decorations. Return toward Turmi and, timing and roads permitting, continue to Dimeka for its Saturday market, one of the most important traditional markets in the southern Omo Valley. People from surrounding communities, especially the Hamer, come to trade produce, livestock, clothing, jewellery and crafts, making it an excellent place to observe everyday life. In the late afternoon, visit a traditional Hamer village to learn about their homes, family life, livestock, clothing and customs. If a Hamer bull-jumping ceremony, an important rite of passage for young men, takes place that day and access is possible, you will have the chance to witness it; ceremonies follow community schedules and cannot be guaranteed. Overnight: Buska Lodge, Turmi.
Day 10
Turmi – Dassanech – Key Afer – Jinka
After breakfast, drive toward the lower Omo River to visit the Dassanech people, whose way of life is adapted to the far south of Ethiopia; depending on conditions, you may cross the Omo River by traditional boat to reach the community. Return to Turmi for lunch, then continue north toward Key Afer, stopping to meet the Bena boys, known for their traditional stilt walking. Around Key Afer you may also meet Mursi people and learn about their traditions, clothing and body adornment. The Mursi traditionally live farther west in the Mago area rather than in Key Afer itself, and a dedicated visit there depends on current security and access conditions. Continue to Jinka and, if time allows, visit an Ari village. Overnight: Nasa Hotel, Jinka.
Day 11
Fly Jinka – Addis Ababa – Farewell Dinner
After breakfast, transfer to Jinka Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy free time to relax, freshen up or do some last-minute shopping. In the evening, celebrate the end of your journey with a farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant, with Ethiopian food, music and cultural performances. Overnight: Lobelia Hotel, Addis Ababa.
Day 12
Addis Ababa – Departure
After breakfast, check out from your hotel and, depending on your flight time, enjoy some free time before your transfer to Bole International Airport for your international flight home. What to bring for the Danakil Depression: a torch or head lamp for walking at night, a small backpack for the hike up the volcano, closed and comfortable hiking shoes, sun protection such as sunscreen and a hat, a jacket for the night on the volcano, tissues, and a sleeping bag, pillow or blanket (these can also be provided).

What our guests say
Rated 5.0 on Tripadvisor and Google, and 4.9 on SafariBookings.
“My tour operator was very communicative even before the trip began and very responsive on WhatsApp. He booked all my domestic flights and arranged all my airport pick-ups and drop-offs. He had professional guides in all the regions I visited, the itinerary was clear, and he was flexible with any changes. There were no extra costs. He is reliable, communicative and well experienced. I will be back with the same company.”

They were patient, professional, knowledgeable and took great care of us. Everything was seamlessly coordinated and they were always on time for pickups and made sure we were briefed in advance of the itinerary and any changes. One of my top travel destinations in Africa, with some of the kindest and warmest people. Maereg went above and beyond! First-class service, always with a smile!”
