Ethiopia: a journey through the cradle of humanity

When travellers think of the world’s great cultural destinations, Egypt, Italy and India often come to mind. Yet in the Horn of Africa lies one of humanity’s greatest treasures: a land of ancient civilisations, sacred traditions, dramatic landscapes and living heritage, where history is woven into daily life rather than confined to museums.

Ethiopia holds a unique place as the cradle of humankind. The discovery of Lucy, a 3.2-million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis unearthed in the Afar region in 1974, transformed our understanding of human origins, and her story can be explored at the National Museum in Addis Ababa.

The country follows its own calendar of thirteen months and counts the hours from sunrise rather than midnight. Having resisted long-term colonial rule, it has preserved its languages, customs and beliefs with exceptional pride.

Its spiritual heritage is profound. Ethiopia has been Christian since the 4th century, and tradition holds that the Ark of the Covenant rests in Axum at the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion. The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela remain active places of worship, filled with chant, incense and pilgrims in white, while festivals such as Timkat and Meskel fill the streets with colour and devotion.

Ethiopia is also the birthplace of coffee. Legend places its discovery in the forests of Kaffa, and the coffee ceremony, beans roasted, ground and brewed before your eyes, remains the country’s great symbol of hospitality and friendship.

With more than 80 ethnic groups, the country is a mosaic of cultures, from the peoples of the Omo Valley to the royal city of Gondar and the obelisks of Axum. Its cuisine, built around injera made from the ancient grain teff and shared from a common platter, is a joy for every traveller, including vegetarians and vegans.

Above all, it is the warmth of Ethiopians that leaves the deepest impression. Come and explore the land where humanity began, where traditions endure, and where every journey tells a story. Discover Ethiopia. Experience the Extraordinary!
