As our visit to Lalibela was curtailed (UK government advice) we had a 3 day stay in Addis Ababa to fill. Our Hotel (lobelia) recommended Mr. Abay and we were not disappointed. Communication beforehand was excellent; we were clear about the suggested itinerary. We were picked up at the hotel in good time and our first day was a full Addis experience. Abuya (our guide) knew exactly where to take us and his extensive historical, religious and cultural knowledge ensured we were well informed.

Best experience in Rock Churches of Lalibela

The Rock Churches of Lalibela are just incredible but it wouldn't have been the same without our tour guide Maereg. He knows very well the history and could answer all our questions. But the most we like about him was that he isn't that kind of guide that follows or tells you what to do. He gave us our space when we needed. Maereg knows his community very well and he helps them in every aspect of his life. I would highly recommend him. I am pretty sure you will have a lovely experience as we did.

Rock Hewn churches Perfection!!

Wow is all I can say! The historical landmark of Lalibela was an unforgettable experience. Perfection is an understatement! Maereg was the perfect guide! He speaks great English and very responsive to emails! I got a response in less than 24 hours as they are in a different time zone so immediately if you ask me. He waited for me at the airport even though I was an hour late due to flight confusion on my end. He is extremely knowledgeable and gave me a deep understanding of the rock hewn churches.

I went back to Lalibela after a 15 year hiatus to show my wife the rich history of my culture. We got a phone number from the website and gave a call the day before we arrived at Lalibela. We met Mareg, who told us he was going to be our guide. He was at the airport waiting. Our visit was excellent. I ended up feeling like my prior visit was subpar as Mareg from extraordinary gave us the best tour around the churches. He did more than that; he was attentive to our needs, arranged transportation as necessary, was available when needed and was knowledgeable about the history.

The best guide in Ethiopia!

We arrived in Ethiopia and after two days looking around the churches in Lalibela we headed off on a 4 day trek with Maereg. We had never visited the country before and so were full of questions about anything and everything. Maereg spoke perfect English and his knowledge was really excellent about everything we saw on our trek. He was particularly good with spotting birds and knowing their names. He was very attentive, helping us and being there when we needed it, but also giving us space to sit quietly and take in the breathtaking views. He was fun, very polite and a truly excellent guide.

Visiting the churches of Lalibela was a highlight of a long-awaited trip to Ethiopia. The churches are amazing-- the architecture and technique, their testimony to history, faith and culture. We credit our guide, Maereg, with helping us appreciate it all. Our hotel (Old Abyssinia) put us in touch with Maereg. We had requested a knowledgeable guide with a good command of English. Maereg was this and more! Highly recommend Maereg!

My family and I (A group of 5) people got in contact with Maereg through our hotel. We were in Lalibela Jan 5-7, just in time for the Ethiopian Christmas. Lalibela was at its peak. Thousands of people from all over the country as well as tourists all over the place to experience the beauty of Lalibela in one of the most celebrated days in Ethiopia: Gena. Wonderful and professional experience

Maereg is a great, friendly and very skilled guide, who made my short visit to Ethiopia deeply memorable to say the least! I went on the 4-day trek to Abune Yosef, which was an amazing experience. Maereg is very knowledgable about the the local flora and fauna, and he showed me many interesting birds. I experienced problems with the high altitude upon approaching the peak, but i felt in very good hands. As I got very dizzy and feverish, we organized to head down to Lalibela by car the last day, and Maereg facilitated this in a very professional and smooth way.

We have travelled extensively but this is one of the most wonderful and humbling experiences we have done. Maereg is a amazing person to show you the highlights of the Wollo and Lalibela. The interaction with the communities and the landscapes are without equal. The accommodation is basic but stunning at the same timbering perched on the edge of the escarpment with breathtaking views. Amazing trekking and life experience with a super guide!

Breathtaking Tour

I’ve taken many Viator/TripAdvisor tours over the last several years and I’ll say the hospitality and attention to detail shown made it one of the most memorable and fun adventures I’ve booked. The church’s were breathtaking. He explained all the details of the churches and different sites with history and context. The final spot on the tour is a can’t miss restaurant serving Ethiopian food overlooking the valleys and plains of lalibella. The tour was hassle and stress free from beginning to end and never felt uncomfortable. An amazing 6 days tour in Ethiopia
