Located approximately 42 kilometers west of Addis Ababa, Menagesha Suba Forest is one of Ethiopia’s oldest and most remarkable protected forests. This magnificent natural treasure covers around 2,500 hectares of indigenous forest together with approximately 1,300 hectares of exotic plantation forest, stretching across the southern and western slopes of Mount Wechecha at elevations ranging from 2,300 to 3,000 meters above sea level.
The forest is dominated by impressive native trees such as juniper, Hagenia, and podocarpus, creating a rare highland ecosystem that preserves one of the largest remaining patches of indigenous forest in the Addis Ababa region. Historically, the area was associated with Emperor Menelik II and served as an important royal forest site.
Above the forest line rises Mount Wechecha, an extinct volcano reaching 3,385 meters in elevation. Its upper slopes are covered with unique afro-alpine vegetation, including Erica and Helichrysum species, offering breathtaking landscapes and excellent opportunities for hiking and nature exploration.
Menagesha Suba Forest provides a refuge for a variety of wildlife, including the endemic Menelik’s bushbuck, as well as larger predators such as leopards. The forest is also an important habitat for Ethiopia’s unique birdlife, including species such as the black-winged lovebird, Abyssinian woodpecker, Ethiopian oriole, banded barbet, yellow-fronted lovebird, and Abyssinian catbird.
