Dear Traveler,
Thank you for choosing Extraordinary Ethiopia Tours.
We are delighted to welcome you to Ethiopia. This guide has been prepared to help you enjoy a safe, comfortable, and memorable journey. Please take a few minutes to read the following information before your departure.

- You have purchased comprehensive travel insurance covering medical expenses, emergency evacuation, trip interruption, and personal belongings.
- You have informed us of any dietary requirements, allergies, medical conditions, or mobility needs.

- Light jacket or fleece for cool mornings and evenings
- Hat and sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Insect repellent
- Personal medications
- Basic first-aid kit
- Camera
- Power bank
- Universal travel adapter
- Reusable water bottle
- Small backpack for day excursions
Weather and Climate
Ethiopia offers a remarkable variety of climates.
Highland regions such as Addis Ababa, Lalibela, Gondar, and the Simien Mountains are generally cool, especially during the evenings.
Lowland destinations such as the Omo Valley, Danakil Depression, and Awash National Park can be extremely hot.
Please pack clothing suitable for the regions included in your itinerary.
Respecting Local Culture
Ethiopia is one of Africa’s oldest civilizations and is home to diverse cultures, languages, and religious traditions.
We kindly ask all visitors to:
- Dress modestly when visiting churches and monasteries.
- Remove shoes before entering Ethiopian Orthodox churches.
- Follow your guide’s instructions.
- Ask permission before photographing people.
- Respect local customs and ceremonies.
A smile, a greeting, and genuine interest are always appreciated.
Visiting Tribal Communities
When visiting indigenous communities in the Omo Valley, we encourage respectful and meaningful interaction.
If you wish to support local communities, please speak with your guide first.
Rather than handing out gifts directly, we recommend supporting local schools or purchasing useful supplies through community leaders whenever possible.
Photography
Ethiopia offers incredible photography opportunities.
Please remember:
- Always ask permission before photographing individuals.
- Photography is prohibited around military installations, airports, government buildings, and certain security areas.
- Some religious ceremonies may restrict photography.
Your guide will advise you whenever restrictions apply.
Drone Cameras and Binoculars
Drone cameras are not permitted to enter Ethiopia without prior government authorization. Any traveler bringing a drone may have it temporarily confiscated by customs until the appropriate permits are presented.
Professional filming equipment and, in some cases, binoculars may also require customs clearance.
If you intend to bring any specialized equipment, please notify us before your departure so we can advise you on the necessary procedures.
Money and Payments
The Ethiopian Birr (ETB) is the official currency.
Credit cards are accepted in many hotels and restaurants in Addis Ababa, but cash is still essential in many parts of the country.
We recommend bringing US Dollars or Euros for exchange.
ATMs are available in larger cities but may not be available in remote destinations.
Domestic Flights
Ethiopian Airlines operates one of Africa’s largest domestic networks.
If your international and domestic tickets are booked separately:
- Collect your luggage after arriving in Addis Ababa.
- Complete immigration and customs.
- Re-check your luggage for your domestic flight.
Please note that domestic flight schedules may occasionally change due to operational or weather conditions.
Should this happen, our team will assist with alternative arrangements.
Domestic Flight Baggage Allowance
Domestic flights have baggage restrictions.
If your international flight is with Ethiopian Airlines on the same ticket, your international baggage allowance generally applies.
If booked separately, lower baggage limits may apply.
Please contact us if you are unsure about your allowance.
Health and Safety
Your wellbeing is our priority.
We recommend:
- Comprehensive travel insurance.
- Bringing prescription medications.
- Carrying basic medicine for headaches, stomach upset, and motion sickness.
- Drinking only bottled or filtered water.
- Using sunscreen and staying hydrated.
Travelers arriving from countries where Yellow Fever is present will need to present a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate.
Please check the latest entry requirements before departure.
Altitude
Many Ethiopian destinations are above 2,000 meters (6,500 feet), including Addis Ababa and Lalibela.
You may experience mild altitude symptoms during your first day.
We recommend:
- Drinking plenty of water
- Avoiding excessive alcohol
- Taking it easy upon arrival
Electricity and Internet
Electricity is 220 volts (50 Hz) using European-style plugs (Type C, E, and F).
Power interruptions occasionally occur.
We recommend bringing:
- Universal travel adapter
- Power bank
- Spare charging cables
Wi-Fi is available in many hotels, although speeds may vary.
Local SIM cards can be purchased upon arrival.
Road Conditions
Road conditions vary throughout Ethiopia.
Many highways are paved, while roads in remote regions may be rough or unpaved.
Our experienced drivers and carefully maintained vehicles ensure the safest and most comfortable journey possible.
Responsible Tourism
Extraordinary Ethiopia Tours is committed to responsible tourism.
We encourage all guests to:
- Respect local traditions.
- Reduce plastic waste.
- Support locally owned businesses.
- Protect wildlife.
- Leave no litter.
- Help preserve Ethiopia’s natural and cultural heritage for future generations.
Tipping
Tipping is voluntary but greatly appreciated.
If you are satisfied with the service provided by your guide, driver, or local staff, gratuities are a thoughtful way to recognize their hard work.
Your tour leader can provide guidance if you would like advice on local tipping customs.
Accessibility
Some destinations include uneven terrain, steep steps, and remote locations that may not be suitable for wheelchairs.
If you have limited mobility, please inform us before booking so we can recommend the most appropriate arrangements.
Flexible Itinerary
While we always aim to operate the tour exactly as planned, minor itinerary adjustments may occasionally be necessary due to weather, road conditions, local events, government regulations, or flight schedule changes.
Any changes will always be made with your safety, comfort, and overall experience in mind.
Emergency Contact
Please save our contact details before your arrival.
If you require assistance at any time during your journey, our team is available 24 hours a day.
