Known as “The Mountain That Smokes” in the Afar language, Erta Ale is a basaltic shield volcano famous for its persistent lava lake activity. It is one of the few volcanoes in the world with a continuously active lava lake and has remained active for more than a century.

Located in the remote Danakil Depression, Erta Ale is one of Ethiopia’s most fascinating and physically demanding natural attractions. The volcano consists of two main pit craters, with the larger crater currently inactive. The smaller crater, approximately 140 meters in diameter and between 60 and 90 meters deep, contains the active lava lake that creates one of the most spectacular volcanic scenes on Earth.
