Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

This itinerary is carefully planned, but minor adjustments may be made due to weather, local festivals, road conditions or your personal interests to ensure the best possible experience.

  1. Day 1

    Welcome to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Upon arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to the Best Western Plus Hotel, conveniently located near the airport. After settling in, you will meet our experienced local guide and begin exploring Ethiopia’s vibrant capital city. Located in the Entoto Mountains at an altitude of about 2,400 meters above sea level, Addis Ababa enjoys a pleasant climate and is known for its wide boulevards, colorful markets, and beautiful jacaranda trees. Your city tour begins at Mount Entoto, offering panoramic views of the capital and a great introduction to Addis Ababa. Continue to the National Museum, home to Ethiopia’s most important historical collections, including ancient artifacts, royal memorabilia, traditional and contemporary Ethiopian art, and a replica of Lucy, the famous 3.2-million-year-old hominid fossil discovered in Ethiopia. Your sightseeing continues at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of Addis Ababa’s most important religious landmarks, known for its beautiful stained-glass windows, impressive architecture, and the tomb of Emperor Haile Selassie. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Ethiopian dinner with cultural music and dance (if time permits). Overnight: Best Western Plus Hotel, Addis Ababa.

  2. Day 2

    From Addis Ababa to Harar

After breakfast, we will take a domestic flight from Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa, where we continue our journey by road to Awaday, one of Ethiopia’s largest and most famous Khat trading centers. Every morning, this vibrant town comes alive as thousands of traders gather to buy and sell Khat, a traditional leafy plant native to the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. You will witness the unique atmosphere of this centuries-old trade, where the sorting, weighing, and recording of transactions are still carried out by hand. Continue to Harar, one of Ethiopia’s most historic and culturally significant cities, often considered the fourth holiest city in the Islamic world after Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem. Upon arrival, explore the city’s colorful streets, narrow alleyways, ancient mosques, and unique architecture influenced by African, Arabian, and Indian cultures. Visit the Arthur Rimbaud Cultural Center, located in a beautiful traditional merchant house where the famous French poet is believed to have lived. The museum displays his life, historical photographs of Harar, and exhibits showcasing the city’s rich heritage. Later, explore Harar’s lively local market and experience daily life within the ancient city walls. In the evening, enjoy one of Harar’s most famous traditions: a visit with the Hyena Men. You will have the rare opportunity to observe the unique relationship between the people of Harar and wild hyenas, which have been fed by local families for generations. Overnight: Ras Hotel, Harar.

  3. Day 3

    Sightseeing in Harar

Today, we continue exploring the unique cultural heritage of Harar, a city famous for its distinctive architecture, traditions, and vibrant history. We begin with a visit to a traditional Harari family home, where you will experience the warm hospitality of the local people and discover the remarkable interior design of these historic houses. Beautifully decorated with colorful woven baskets, traditional household items, and cultural artifacts, these homes reflect the rich identity and craftsmanship of the Harari people. Continue to the Harari City Museum, located in a beautiful mansion where Emperor Haile Selassie spent part of his childhood. The museum houses an impressive collection of historical treasures, including ancient Islamic manuscripts, centuries-old Harari coins, traditional clothing, musical instruments, and cultural artifacts. Your exploration continues with a visit to the tomb of Emir Nur, the ruler responsible for constructing the historic walls that surround the old city of Harar. Enjoy more time wandering through the narrow alleyways, colorful markets, and historic neighborhoods of this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site. Overnight: Ras Hotel, Harar.

  4. Day 4

    Back to Addis Ababa

After breakfast, we depart Harar and drive back to Dire Dawa for our return flight to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, we transfer to the Best Western Plus Hotel and check in for another comfortable stay. The afternoon is free to relax and enjoy the hotel facilities, explore local shops, or take part in optional activities such as shopping or a spa treatment. Overnight: Best Western Plus Hotel, Addis Ababa.

  5. Day 5

    Ancient Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your included flight to Lalibela, located in the highlands of northern Ethiopia. This remarkable town is home to one of the world’s greatest architectural and religious wonders: the famous rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, built in the 12th century by King Lalibela. Inspired by the desire to create a “New Jerusalem” after pilgrimages to the Holy Land became difficult, King Lalibela ordered the excavation of these extraordinary churches from solid volcanic rock. Carved below ground level and connected by tunnels, trenches, and ceremonial passageways, these monolithic structures showcase incredible engineering, artistic skill, and religious devotion. During your visit, explore the first group of churches, including Biete Medhani Alem, believed to be the largest rock-hewn church in the world, and Biete Giyorgis, the iconic cross-shaped church carved entirely from stone. Discover the beautifully carved entrances, windows, columns, and ancient murals that decorate these sacred sites, which have remained important centers of worship and pilgrimage for nearly nine centuries. After exploring this UNESCO World Heritage Site, return to your lodge for a relaxing evening. Overnight: Sora Lodge, Lalibela.

  6. Day 6

    Exploring Lalibela

After breakfast, we begin our excursion to Yemrehanna Kristos, one of Ethiopia’s oldest and most fascinating churches. Dating back to the Axumite period, this remarkable church predates the famous rock-hewn churches of Lalibela by nearly a century. Built inside a natural cave beneath Mount Abune Yosef, one of Ethiopia’s highest peaks, Yemrehanna Kristos showcases unique architectural techniques with alternating layers of timber beams and stone walls. Inside the church, admire the beautifully carved wooden details, decorative stonework, cross-shaped window designs, and ancient paintings that reflect Ethiopia’s rich religious heritage. The peaceful mountain setting and extraordinary construction make this site a memorable cultural experience. After lunch, continue your guided exploration of Lalibela’s remaining rock-hewn churches, learning more about their history, religious significance, and the fascinating stories behind these incredible monuments. Overnight: Sora Lodge, Lalibela.

  7. Day 7

    Fly to Arba Minch

After breakfast, we transfer to Lalibela Airport for our included flight back to Addis Ababa, where we connect with our onward flight to southern Ethiopia. Upon arrival in Arba Minch, we will be warmly welcomed and transferred to Paradise Lodge, beautifully situated overlooking the forests and lakes of the region. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the lodge, featuring traditional thatched-roof bungalows, private verandas, and stunning views of the natural beauty of southern Ethiopia. Overnight: Paradise Lodge, Arba Minch.

  8. Day 8

    Lake Chamo & Chencha

After breakfast, we begin the day with a guided boat excursion on Lake Chamo, one of Ethiopia’s most beautiful lakes. Surrounded by lush vegetation, wetlands, and scenic hills, the lake is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including hippos, numerous bird species, and some of Africa’s largest crocodiles. Enjoy a memorable boat ride as we search for these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat. After lunch, we drive into the Guge Mountains to Chencha, a highland village inhabited by the Dorze people. The Dorze are famous for their unique beehive-shaped houses, traditionally built using local materials such as bamboo, hardwood poles, and enset (false banana) leaves. These impressive structures can reach up to 20 feet in height and are designed to withstand the mountain climate for many decades. During our visit, learn about the Dorze way of life, including traditional farming practices, food preparation, weaving, and the production of colorful cotton textiles. With insights from your local guide, you will have the opportunity to experience the daily traditions and hospitality of this remarkable community. Overnight: Paradise Lodge, Arba Minch.

  9. Day 9

Highlands of the Konso Tribe & Onward to Turmi

After breakfast, we check out and travel through the scenic highlands to the land of the Konso people, a community known for its unique cultural traditions and remarkable landscape. The Konso live in impressive fortified settlements built on hilltops and surrounded by stone walls, reflecting a way of life that has been preserved for more than 400 years. During our visit, explore the traditional villages, where communities are organized into neighborhoods connected by narrow, maze-like pathways and protected by carefully constructed gates. Learn about the Konso’s traditional social structures, customs, and daily life. Surrounding the villages, discover the extensive dry-stone terraces that demonstrate the ingenuity of generations of Konso farmers. These terraces help prevent soil erosion, conserve water, and allow agriculture to flourish in this challenging environment. You will also learn about the Konso’s unique burial traditions and the famous wooden statues known as Waka, which honor respected ancestors. After exploring the Konso Highlands, continue our journey to Turmi, the cultural heart of the Hamer people. Upon arrival, check in at Buska Lodge for a two-night stay. Overnight: Buska Lodge, Turmi.

  10. Day 10

Tribes of the Omo River’s Eastern Shores

Today, we continue our cultural journey through the Omo Valley with visits to two of the region’s fascinating indigenous communities: the Karo and Hamer tribes. In the morning, we visit the Karo people, one of Ethiopia’s smallest ethnic groups, living along the eastern banks of the Omo River. The Karo are agro-pastoralists who practice traditional farming and cattle raising. They are especially known for their incredible body painting, using natural pigments made from white chalk, charcoal, minerals, and colored earth. You will also have the opportunity to learn about their unique traditions, including the symbolic scarification practiced by Karo men to represent achievements such as hunting or defeating enemies. In the afternoon, continue to a Hamer village to experience the traditions and daily life of one of the Omo Valley’s most well-known communities. The Hamer are famous for their cattle-based lifestyle, colorful clothing, elaborate beadwork, and traditional ceremonies. Learn about their customs, including the famous bull-jumping ceremony, an important rite of passage for young men becoming adults. Although bull jumping ceremonies take place at specific times and cannot always be guaranteed, your visit provides a unique opportunity to connect with the Hamer people, explore their traditional way of life, and gain insight into their rich cultural heritage. Return to Buska Lodge in Turmi for dinner and overnight. Overnight: Buska Lodge, Turmi.

  11. Day 11

    Omorate & Onward to Jinka

After breakfast, we depart Turmi and travel south through the scenic landscapes of the Lower Omo Valley to Omorate, a remote riverside town near the Ethiopian-Kenya border. From here, we cross the Omo River by local boat to visit the Dassanech people and experience their unique way of life. Also known as the “People of the Delta,” the Dassanech are traditionally cattle herders, farmers, and fishermen who have adapted to the challenging environment of the Omo River region. Unlike many other ethnic groups in southern Ethiopia, the Dassanech community is made up of people from different backgrounds and is organized into eight main clans, each with its own territory, identity, and traditions. During our visit, spend time with local families and learn about their daily activities, traditional homes, social structures, and cultural practices related to marriage, family, and community life. After the visit, return to Turmi for lunch before continuing our journey to Jinka, the cultural center of the Omo Valley. Upon arrival, check in and relax at your lodge. Overnight: Eco Omo Lodge, Jinka.

  12. Day 12

The Ways of the Mursi & Back to Addis Ababa

After breakfast, we depart Jinka and travel deep into Mago National Park, a remote and beautiful region of the Omo Valley located along the eastern banks of the Omo River. The park is home to the Mursi people, one of Ethiopia’s most distinctive indigenous communities, known for their traditional body decorations, cultural ceremonies, and unique way of life. During our visit to a Mursi village, learn about their traditions and daily activities. Mursi women are known for their distinctive lip plates, which are an important part of their cultural heritage, while both men and women decorate their bodies with natural pigments, jewelry, and ornaments. Mursi men are also recognized for the traditional donga stick fighting ceremonies, which represent strength and social status within the community. After our cultural experience, return to Jinka for lunch before transferring to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, transfer to the Best Western Plus Hotel and enjoy a farewell dinner celebrating the end of your Ethiopian adventure. Overnight: Best Western Plus Hotel, Addis Ababa.

  13. Day 13

For those interested in souvenirs, a visit to Merkato, Africa’s largest open-air market, offers a chance to find traditional crafts, spices, textiles, and local products. In the afternoon, continue your exploration of Addis Ababa with a visit to the Ethnological Museum, located in the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie within the beautiful grounds of Addis Ababa University.
