Why We Go
Ethiopia’s longest cave system, carved through limestone by the Weyib River.
Sof Omar lies east of the Bale Mountains, where the Weyib River has cut an extraordinary network of limestone caves stretching for about 15 kilometres, one of the longest cave systems in Africa. Inside are towering pillars, natural arches, domes and deep chambers.
According to tradition the caves sheltered Sheikh Sof Omar in the 12th century, and they remain a place of pilgrimage. A guided walk through the main section takes around an hour, and can easily be added to a Bale Mountains itinerary.
Highlights
- The Chamber of Columns with pillars up to 20 metres high
- The underground course of the Weyib River
- Shrines connected with Sheikh Sof Omar
- Dik-dik, kudu and dry-country birds around the entrance
