Why We Go
Oryx plains, hot springs and a waterfall, three hours east of the capital.
Straddling the Awash River in the lowlands east of Addis Ababa, the park combines arid acacia woodland, open grassland and riverine forest. Wildlife includes Beisa oryx, Swayne’s hartebeest, gerenuk, warthogs and baboons, and the birdlife is outstanding.
The Awash Falls, where the river plunges into its gorge, are a highlight, as are the clear blue hot-spring pools at Filwoha. Its proximity to the capital makes Awash ideal for a short safari.
Highlights
- Beisa oryx and Soemmerring’s gazelle on the Ilala Sala plains
- The Awash Falls tumbling into the river gorge
- The palm-fringed hot springs at Filwoha
- More than 450 recorded bird species
