Bahir Dar is a beautiful lakeside town located on the southeastern shore of Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake. The town is known for its scenic landscapes, vibrant culture, and traditional fishing practices, where local fishermen still use papyrus boats on the lake.

Located approximately 37 kilometers from Bahir Dar, the magnificent Blue Nile Falls, locally known as Tis Issat (“Smoking Water”), is one of Ethiopia’s most spectacular natural attractions. Here, the Blue Nile plunges dramatically into a deep gorge, creating a breathtaking sight surrounded by lush scenery.

From Bahir Dar, visitors can explore some of the ancient monasteries located on the islands and shores of Lake Tana. These historic monasteries preserve priceless religious treasures, ancient manuscripts, and remarkable collections of Ethiopian Orthodox Christian art.

Important sites include Dega Estifanos, known for its valuable collection of icons and the remains of several medieval Ethiopian emperors; Kibran Gabriel, one of the most visited monasteries by male travelers from Bahir Dar; and Ura Kidane Mehret, famous for its beautiful frescoes and colorful religious paintings.

Kibran Gabriel features an impressive cathedral-like structure that was first built in the late 17th century. Dega Estifanos, which traditionally restricts access to women, is located on an island in Lake Tana and can be reached by a steep and winding path, adding to the sense of adventure and discovery.
