Negash is a small historic village located about 60 kilometers east of Mekele, the capital of the Tigray Region. It is believed to be the site of the first mosque built in Ethiopia and holds great importance in the history of Islam in the country.

Negash also serves as an enduring reminder of the warm welcome extended by the Ethiopian king of the time to the early Muslim refugees, including members of the family of Prophet Muhammad, who fled persecution in their homeland and found refuge in Ethiopia during the early years of the 7th century.

Since then, Negash has remained a place of great historical and religious significance, symbolizing peaceful coexistence between Muslim and Christian communities in Ethiopia.
