Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa
Welcome to Abyssinia, the Land of Origins!
Upon arrival, you will be welcomed and transferred in a modern, air-conditioned vehicle to your 3- or 4-star accommodation in the heart of Addis Ababa.
Begin your city tour with a visit to the National Museum of Ethiopia, home to the famous fossil "Lucy" and an impressive collection showcasing Ethiopia’s ancient history and cultural heritage.
Continue to the Ethnological Museum, located within the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie and surrounded by the beautiful gardens and fountains of Addis Ababa University. Even if you are not usually a museum enthusiast, this fascinating museum is well worth a visit and is considered one of the finest museums in Africa.
Before lunch, visit Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of Addis Ababa’s most important religious landmarks, known for its unique architectural style and historical significance.
After a relaxing lunch, drive to the Entoto Mountains, the best location to enjoy panoramic views of the capital. Entoto is also an important historical site where Emperor Menelik II lived and established his palace before the foundation of modern Addis Ababa.

Day 2: Fly to Dire Dawa and Visit Harar
Take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa. Upon arrival, begin the drive to Harar, passing through Awaday, the center of Ethiopia’s famous khat trade. Native to the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, khat is a leafy plant traditionally used for its mild stimulant effects.
Continue your journey to Harar, one of Ethiopia’s most historic cities and considered the fourth holiest city in the Islamic world after Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem. Upon arrival, explore the city’s lively streets, narrow alleyways, and unique architectural heritage. Harar is home to more than 180 mosques and shrines, including several ancient sites dating back centuries.
In the evening, experience one of Harar’s most unique traditions by meeting the famous Hyena Men of Harar. This remarkable tradition, passed down from generation to generation, involves feeding wild hyenas by hand. Every night, these animals come close to the city in search of food, creating an unforgettable cultural experience.

Day 3: Explore the Cultural Heritage of Harar
Today, continue exploring the unique cultural heritage of Harar, starting with a visit to a traditional Harari home. The distinctive houses of Harar are among the city’s most remarkable features. Entered through beautifully carved doors, these homes showcase exceptional interior designs centered around a living room decorated with colorful traditional baskets and various household items.
Continue to the Harari City Museum, located in a historic balconied mansion where Emperor Haile Selassie spent part of his childhood. The museum houses a fascinating collection of historical artifacts, including ancient Islamic manuscripts, Harari coins dating back more than 200 years, traditional clothing, and old musical instruments.
You will also visit the tomb of Emir Nur, the ruler responsible for building the ancient defensive walls surrounding the historic city of Harar.

Day 4: Fly Back to Addis Ababa
Depart Harar in the morning and drive back to Dire Dawa for your return flight to Addis Ababa.
Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, transfer back to your hotel and enjoy some time to relax and make use of the hotel facilities. You may also enjoy shopping or optional spa treatments.

Day 5: Fly to Mekele and Explore the Rock-Hewn Churches of Tigray
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Mekele. Upon arrival, meet your driver and local guide, then continue the journey to Hawzen.
En route, visit the semi rock-hewn church of Wukro Cherkos, an impressive historical and religious site carved into the mountains of Tigray.
Continue to Abreha we Atsbeha Church, one of Ethiopia’s most important ancient churches. Its remarkable architecture and beautifully decorated interior make it a fascinating place to visit.
Finally, visit Medhanialem Adikesho (also known as Adi Kesho), one of Tigray’s oldest, tallest, and most impressive rock-hewn churches. The church features roughly carved exterior and interior walls, which highlight the beauty of its elaborately carved coffered ceiling and ancient architectural details.
Continue to Hawzen for check-in at your lodge.

Day 6: Explore the Rock-Hewn Churches of Gheralta
Begin the day with a visit to Maryam Korkor Church, a remarkable cross-shaped rock-hewn church known for its unique architecture, cruciform pillars, arches, and beautiful ancient frescoes. The hike to the church takes approximately one hour and offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding Gheralta Mountains.
From Maryam Korkor, continue with a short walk to Daniel Korkor Church. Perched on a dramatic cliff, this lesser-visited church provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and features impressive ancient paintings.
Later, visit the famous Abuna Yemata Guh Church, carved high into a steep cliff. Dedicated to Abuna Yemata, one of the Nine Saints who contributed to the spread of Christianity in Ethiopia, this monolithic church is renowned for its remarkable 5th-century dome and wall paintings.
Although the climb to Abuna Yemata Guh is challenging and requires careful attention, the incredible artwork, historical significance, and stunning views make it a truly rewarding experience.

Day 7: Drive to Mekele and Fly Back to Addis Ababa
After breakfast, drive from Hawzen to Mekele. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch in Mekele before transferring to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa.

Day 8: Fly to Jinka and Explore the Mursi and Hamer Tribes
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Jinka. Fly from Addis Ababa to Jinka with Ethiopian Airlines.
Upon arrival in Jinka, begin the drive to Turmi. En route, visit the Mursi people. Please note that Mago National Park is currently closed, so it is not possible to visit the Mursi communities living inside the park. Instead, we will visit the Mursi community near Key Afer, where you will have the opportunity to learn about their unique culture and traditions.
The Mursi are one of Ethiopia’s most distinctive ethnic groups. They live in traditional huts made from natural materials such as straw and leaves. Mursi women are well known for wearing clay lip plates and decorative ornaments in their stretched lower lips and earlobes. The Mursi men are also recognized for their traditional hairstyles, body scarification, and cultural practices. The size of the lip plate has traditionally been associated with beauty and social value among women.
Continue your journey to Turmi, home of the Hamer people. Visit a Hamer village and experience their unique way of life. The Hamer are known for their beautiful body decorations, colorful beads, bracelets, and traditional hairstyles. They are also famous for their traditional Evangadi (moonlight) dance and the bull-jumping ceremony, an important rite of passage marking the transition from childhood to adulthood.

Day 9: Visit the Karo Tribe and Drive to Jinka
After an early breakfast, depart from Turmi and drive to the villages of Murulle, Kolcho, and Dus, located along the banks of the Omo River, to visit the Karo people.
The Karo are one of the smallest ethnic groups in the Omo Valley and are well known for their elaborate body and face decorations, especially during traditional ceremonies. They use natural pigments to create unique paintings that reflect their cultural identity and traditions.
After exploring the Karo villages and learning about their way of life, drive back to Turmi for lunch.
In the afternoon, continue the journey to Jinka.

Day 10: Visit Ari Village and Fly Back to Addis Ababa
After breakfast, visit an Ari village, home to the largest ethnic group in the Omo Valley. The Ari people are well known for their skills in agriculture, pottery, traditional crafts, and their unique way of life.
Spend time with the local community and learn about their daily activities, traditions, and cultural practices.
In the afternoon, transfer to Jinka Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa.

Day 11: Fly to Gondar and Explore the Historic City
Take a morning flight with Ethiopian Airlines from Addis Ababa to Gondar. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel, check in, and take some time to relax.
In the afternoon, explore Gondar, the former imperial capital of Ethiopia founded by Emperor Fasilides in the 17th century. Known as the "Camelot of Africa," Gondar is famous for its remarkable castles and palaces built by different emperors over a period of more than 236 years. The city’s unique architecture reflects a blend of Ethiopian, Portuguese, and Indian influences.
Visit the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, including Fasilides’ Palace, one of the oldest and most impressive castles in the complex, built in 1632.
Continue your visit to Fasilides’ Bath, a historic royal bathing pool that is still used today during the annual Timkat (Epiphany) celebration.

Day 12: Fly to Lalibela and Visit the Rock-Hewn Churches
Take a morning flight with Ethiopian Airlines from Gondar to Lalibela. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy lunch.
In the afternoon, explore the magnificent rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This remarkable complex of monolithic and semi-monolithic churches was carved directly into the mountainside more than 900 years ago.
The site features the largest monolithic church in the world, a fascinating network of tunnels and passageways, beautifully carved architectural details, and impressive religious paintings.
During your visit, explore the first group of churches, including:

• Bete Denagil
• Debre Sina and Golgotha
You will also visit the third group of churches, which consists of the iconic Bete Giyorgis (St. George Church).

Day 13: Mount Asheton Monastery and Explore Lalibela Churches
After breakfast, take a morning hike or drive to Mount Asheton Monastery, a remarkable 13th-century rock-hewn monastery located on a mountain ridge overlooking Lalibela. Although its architecture may appear simpler compared to Lalibela’s famous rock-hewn churches, the monastery’s true charm lies in its peaceful atmosphere and spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding highlands and town.
In the afternoon, continue exploring the second group of Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches, which includes four churches, including Bete Emanuel, the only fully monolithic church in the southeastern cluster.
Later, enjoy a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony and experience one of Ethiopia’s most important cultural traditions.

Day 14: Fly to Addis Ababa and Departure
After breakfast, check out from your hotel and transfer to Lalibela Airport for your flight to Addis Ababa.

In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at Yod Abyssinia Traditional Restaurant, featuring traditional Ethiopian cuisine, a special cultural buffet, and local drinks. This will be a wonderful opportunity to experience Ethiopia’s unique food, music, and cultural traditions.
After the farewell dinner and cultural celebration, transfer to Addis Ababa Bole International Airport for your international departure.
