Itinerary
Your adventure begins with an early morning departure from Mekelle, heading toward Dodom, the base camp for the legendary Erta Ale Volcano. Travel through one of Ethiopia’s most remote and dramatic landscapes, crossing vast desert plains, ancient lava fields, sandy terrain, and scattered oases.
The challenging 70 km journey takes approximately five hours due to the rugged road conditions and offers unforgettable views of the Afar region’s unique environment. Upon arrival in Dodom, located about 9.5 km from Erta Ale, enjoy an early dinner and prepare for the overnight trek.
Around 8:00 PM, begin the hike to the volcano’s summit, accompanied by camels carrying camping equipment, mattresses, water, and supplies. After reaching the crater rim, witness the incredible sight of Erta Ale’s active lava lake, one of the world’s most remarkable volcanic phenomena.
Spend the night camping near the crater, surrounded by the dramatic glow of the volcano and the endless desert sky.
Overnight camping at Erta Ale Volcano.
Wake up early to enjoy the final views of Erta Ale Volcano before beginning the descent back to Dodom, arriving around 8:00 AM. After breakfast and a short rest, continue your journey deeper into the Danakil Depression toward HamedEla, located approximately 100 km away.
Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way beneath the shade of desert palm trees while taking in the dramatic scenery of this remote region. Arrive in HamedEla in the late afternoon, a small Afar settlement known as the gateway to the famous salt flats of the Danakil Depression.
Explore the surrounding area, where you can witness impressive salt formations and traditional Afar camel caravans transporting salt across the desert. End the day with a breathtaking sunset over Lake Assale, one of the saltiest and lowest lakes on Earth.
Overnight camping in HamedEla under the desert stars.
Start the day with a drive to Ragad (Asebo), an important center for traditional Afar salt mining. Here, witness the centuries-old salt extraction process as local miners cut salt blocks from the ground, shape them into pieces, and load them onto camel caravans traveling toward the Ethiopian highlands.
Continue to the extraordinary Dallol geothermal field, one of the most unique landscapes on Earth. Explore its colorful mineral formations, sulfur springs, salt canyons, and surreal acid pools created by intense geothermal activity.
Visit the remarkable surroundings of Lake Assale, taking in the vast salt plains and dramatic desert scenery before returning to HamedEla for lunch.
