Nech Sar National Park: Ethiopia’s Scenic Wildlife Sanctuary
Situated 510km south of Addis near the town of Arba Minch, in between Lakes Abaya and Chamo. A wide variety of plains game roam freely amongst 514m2 of savannah, dry bush and groundwater forest, which are also the habitat of 188 recorded species of birds.
Located approximately 510 km south of Addis Ababa, near the town of Arba Minch, Nech Sar National Park is one of Ethiopia’s most beautiful wildlife and nature destinations. Situated between the spectacular Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo, the park offers a remarkable combination of open savannah, dry bushland, grasslands, and groundwater forests.
Covering approximately 514 km², Nech Sar National Park is home to a diverse variety of wildlife and bird species. Its extensive grasslands provide an important habitat for plains animals, including bushbuck, Swayne’s hartebeest, Burchell’s zebra, Grant’s gazelle, Guenther’s dik-dik, greater kudu, grey duiker, and Anubis baboons. Lake Chamo, located along the park’s southern boundary, is particularly well known for its populations of large Nile crocodiles and hippos.
Nech Sar is also an excellent destination for birdwatching, with more than 188 recorded bird species. During a visit, bird enthusiasts may have the opportunity to see impressive species such as the red-billed hornbill, grey hornbill, African fish eagle, kori bustard, and Abyssinian ground hornbill.
One of the most spectacular attractions in the area is the viewpoint known as the “Bridge of God,” a narrow strip of land separating Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo. From this viewpoint, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the contrasting colors of the two lakes and the surrounding landscape.
A visit to Nech Sar National Park can also be combined with a boat trip on Lake Chamo, providing an excellent opportunity to observe crocodiles, hippos, and waterbirds from the lake. The nearby town of Arba Minch also makes an ideal base for exploring the park and experiencing the diverse cultures and natural attractions of southern Ethiopia.
