Itinerary
Extraordinary Ethiopia Tours will welcome and assist all clients arriving at Bole International Airport, regardless of their arrival time.
For travelers arriving on morning flights, the tour can begin after checking into the hotel. For those arriving in the afternoon or evening, the tour will begin the following day.
Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel. After some time to refresh, begin your city tour with a scenic drive to Mount Entoto, offering panoramic views over Ethiopia’s capital.
Continue to the National Museum, home to the famous Lucy fossil and a fascinating collection of ancient Ethiopian artifacts. Visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of Addis Ababa’s most important religious landmarks, and explore the Ethnographic Museum, located in the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie.
Conclude the day with a visit to Merkato, one of Africa’s largest open-air markets, where you can experience the vibrant atmosphere, local traditions, and daily life of Addis Ababa.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Bahir Dar, a beautiful lakeside town located on the shores of Lake Tana. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and begin exploring the area with a scenic boat cruise on Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake.
Visit the Ura Kidane Mihret Monastery, one of the lake’s most important monasteries, renowned for its colorful murals, ancient manuscripts, and distinctive round thatched-roof architecture. In the afternoon, drive to Tis Isat Village to visit the spectacular Blue Nile Falls, locally known as Tis Abay or “The Smoking Water.” Enjoy the surrounding scenery and learn about this important natural landmark. (Please note that water flow at the falls varies depending on the season.)
After breakfast, drive through the scenic landscapes of the Amhara highlands to Gondar, the former imperial capital of Ethiopia established in the 17th century. Known as the “Camelot of Africa,” Gondar is famous for its castles, palaces, and rich royal heritage.
In the afternoon, explore the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring impressive castles and palaces built by Emperor Fasilidas and his successors. Continue to Debre Birhan Selassie Church, renowned for its stunning frescoes and its iconic ceiling decorated with hundreds of angel faces.
End your day with a visit to Qusquam Church, a historic religious site associated with Empress Mentewab and Ethiopia’s royal past.
Today, drive to Buyit Ras, the gateway to the spectacular Simien Mountains National Park, often referred to as the “Roof of Africa.” This UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its dramatic escarpments, towering peaks, deep valleys, and breathtaking highland scenery.
Enjoy scenic viewpoints and short hikes through this remarkable landscape while searching for endemic wildlife, including the iconic Gelada baboon, as well as unique birds and other highland species. Experience the raw beauty of one of Ethiopia’s greatest natural treasures before returning to Gondar.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Lalibela, Ethiopia’s holiest city and one of the world’s most remarkable pilgrimage destinations. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and enjoy lunch before beginning your exploration of the Northern Cluster of Lalibela’s famous rock-hewn churches.
Carved directly into red volcanic rock during the 12th century, these extraordinary churches represent one of Ethiopia’s greatest architectural and spiritual achievements. Visit highlights including Bete Medhane Alem, the largest monolithic church in the world, Bete Maryam, Bete Meskel, Bete Golgotha, and the iconic Bete Giyorgis (St. George’s Church), renowned for its unique cross-shaped design carved deep into the ground.
This morning, take a short drive followed by a scenic hike to visit the remarkable Yemrehanna Kristos Church, a 12th-century sanctuary built inside a natural cave. Featuring a unique layered construction of stone and wood, the church offers a fascinating glimpse into Ethiopia’s medieval religious heritage and spiritual traditions.
Return to Lalibela for lunch before continuing your exploration of the Southern Cluster of the famous rock-hewn churches. Visit Bete Gabriel-Rufael, Bete Merkorios, Bete Emmanuel, and Bete Aba Libanos, each showcasing distinctive architectural styles, historical importance, and the remarkable craftsmanship of medieval Ethiopian Christianity.
After breakfast, transfer to Lalibela Airport for your return flight to Addis Ababa. Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy some free time for last-minute shopping, relaxation, or an optional museum visit in the capital.
