Explore the colorful hydrothermal formations of Dallol, visit the vast salt flats of Lake Asale, and meet Afar salt miners who continue centuries-old traditions. Experience a memorable night under the stars and trek to the summit of the legendary Erta Ale Volcano, famous for its dramatic volcanic landscape and one of the world’s most remarkable volcanic features.

Take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, the capital of Ethiopia's Afar Region. Upon arrival at Semera Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our experienced team, including skilled 4WD drivers, a professional cook, local guides, and an official tour leader from the Tourism Authority. A police escort will accompany the expedition, and all camping equipment will be prepared before departure.
After breakfast, begin the scenic drive across the dramatic Afar Desert toward Ert Ale Volcano. Upon arrival, continue to the camping area located on the rim of the caldera. In the late afternoon, at around 5:30 PM, start the approximately one-hour hike to the summit.
Although the famous lava lake is currently inactive, Ert Ale remains one of the world's most fascinating shield volcanoes. From the summit, enjoy breathtaking views of the volcanic crater, rugged lava fields, and the unique geological landscape created by centuries of volcanic activity. After spending time exploring and taking photographs, return to the campsite at around 8:00 PM.
Spend the night camping under the stars in a peaceful open-air setting. Comfortable mattresses, pillows, clean bed linens, and all essential camping facilities are provided to ensure a relaxing and memorable experience in one of Ethiopia's most extraordinary landscapes.

Wake up early, around 5:00 AM, to witness a spectacular sunrise over the volcanic landscape before returning to the campsite for breakfast.
After breakfast, drive to Lake Afdera, a beautiful saltwater lake located in the heart of the Danakil Depression. Surrounded by dramatic desert scenery, the lake offers a refreshing opportunity to enjoy a swim in its warm, mineral-rich waters.
Continue the journey to Hamedela, the gateway to Dallol, where you will set up camp for the night. In the late afternoon, visit Lake Assale (Karum Lake) to admire its breathtaking sunset over the vast salt flats—one of the most unforgettable views in the Danakil Depression.
Overnight in an open-air campsite with comfortable mattresses, pillows clean bed linens, and ample drinking water to keep you hydrated throughout your stay in this remarkable desert environment.

After sunrise, continue to Dallol, one of the most extraordinary geothermal landscapes on Earth. Explore its colorful hydrothermal fields, bubbling hot springs, mineral terraces, and vibrant sulfur deposits. The constantly changing shades of yellow, green, orange, and white create a surreal landscape unlike anywhere else in the world, making Dallol one of Ethiopia's most remarkable natural wonders.
Next, drive to the fascinating salt and mud formations beneath the Dallol crater, where unique geological features reveal another side of this incredible environment. Enjoy a picnic breakfast surrounded by this spectacular scenery.
After breakfast, continue across the endless salt plains of Lake Karum, where you can relax in a natural saltwater pool before visiting the local afar salt miners. Learn about their centuries-old tradition of extracting salt blocks by hand and transporting them by camel caravans across the desert—an enduring cultural practice that has remained largely unchanged for generations.
In the afternoon, depart Hamedela and drive back to Semera Airport for your late afternoon flight to Addis Ababa, bringing your unforgettable Danakil Depression adventure to an end.
