The Nyangatom tribe is a small tribe that lives in the southwest region of the Omo Valley. They have ancestral and cultural associations with the Toposa and other Nilotic-speaking peoples and perform many ritual dances while singing. The Dassanech people are their neighboring tribe. Nyangatom people are semi-nomadic pastoralists, herding cattle, goats, and sheep, and also practice small-scale agriculture. They believe that music, dance, and ritual performances bring blessings and strength to the community. The women are known for wearing multiple layers of colorful bead necklaces and decorating their bodies with scarification. Men often carry rifles and wear simple wraps or cloths. Body painting using natural colors from the earth is common during ceremonies. Traditional dancing is central to their cultural identity, and wealth is measured by the number of cattle a man possesses.
