Overview
This 8-day journey takes you deep into Ethiopia’s Orthodox Christian heartland during Timket, the Epiphany celebration that marks the baptism of Christ. Beginning in Addis Ababa, you’ll travel through the historic northern circuit, including Bahir Dar, Gondar, and Lalibela, where churches are carved into solid rock and time seems to stand still.
Participate in the Timket Eve (Ketera) and baptism ceremonies, where priests carry out sacred rituals with chants, drums, and holy water. These deeply spiritual events unfold in a backdrop of ancient castles, island monasteries, and breathtaking highlands.
Perfect for history buffs, festival seekers, and adventurous travelers, this tour offers both cultural depth and natural beauty in equal measure.
Itinerary
Extraordinary Ethiopia Tours welcomes all guests upon arrival at Bole International Airport. Morning arrivals may begin touring the same day, while later arrivals will start their adventure the following day.
Begin your adventure with a city tour of Addis Ababa. Visit the Ethnographic Museum, an excellent introduction to Ethiopia’s cultural diversity, followed by a stop at the bustling Mercato, one of the largest markets in Africa. Conclude the day with a visit to Trinity Cathedral, the final resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie.
Fly north to Bahir Dar, located on the southern shore of Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake. Upon arrival, enjoy a boat cruise to explore island monasteries such as Ura Kidane Meheret, known for its vibrant murals and relics. In the afternoon, visit Blue Nile Falls at Tis Isat village (note: water flow may vary due to hydroelectric dams).
After breakfast, drive to the historic city of Gondar, Ethiopia’s former imperial capital. Visit the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi) and Debre Berhan Selassie Church, famed for its ceiling of painted angels. In the afternoon, join the Timket Eve (Ketera) celebration, where priests carry the Tabots (replicas of the Ark of the Covenant) in a colorful procession to the baptism site.
Rise early to attend the Timket baptism ceremony, a reenactment of Christ’s baptism in the Jordan River. The water is blessed by priests, a golden cross is dipped, and holy water is sprinkled over the congregation. This is followed by dancing, singing, and the joyful return of the Tabots to their respective churches.
Today, journey to Buhit Ras in the Simien Mountains National Park, known as the “Roof of Africa.” This UNESCO-listed park features jagged cliffs, deep valleys, and endemic species such as the Gelada baboon. Enjoy panoramic views and a short hike before returning to Gondar in the afternoon.
Fly to Lalibela, often considered Ethiopia’s spiritual heart. Tour the world-famous rock-hewn churches, carved directly into red volcanic rock and interconnected by passageways. Explore iconic sites such as Bete Amanuel, Bete Markorios, and the spectacular Bete Giorgis, shaped like a cross.
Take a morning excursion to Genete Mariam, a large monolithic church situated on a hilltop near the Tekaze River. Believed to have been built during the reign of Yakuno Amlak, this unique structure stands openly above ground, making it distinct from the sunken churches of Lalibela. Enjoy scenic views of the highlands and visit rural villages en route.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Addis Ababa. Enjoy some leisure time or an optional short city tour, followed by a farewell dinner hosted by Extraordinary Ethiopia Tours, featuring local cuisine, music, and a traditional coffee ceremony. Later, transfer to the airport for your international departure.
