Itinerary
Extraordinary Ethiopia Tours staff will greet you at Bole International Airport, no matter the time of arrival. Morning arrivals can begin touring after hotel check-in, while afternoon or evening arrivals will start the tour the next day.
Begin your journey in the capital with visits to the Ethnographic Museum, offering a great introduction to Ethiopian culture, and the bustling Mercato, one of Africa’s largest open-air markets. The day ends with a visit to Trinity Cathedral, final resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie.
Fly to Bahir Dar, a city known for its natural beauty and proximity to Lake Tana. After hotel check-in, embark on a boat trip across Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake, and visit the Ura Kidane Meheret monastery, known for its ancient manuscripts and colorful murals. In the afternoon, drive to Tis Isat village to see the famous Blue Nile Falls (note: water levels may vary due to a nearby dam). Return to Bahir Dar for dinner and rest.
After breakfast, drive to Gondar, once the royal capital of Ethiopia. Explore the impressive Fasil Ghebbi Castle complex, built in the 17th century, and the beautifully frescoed Debre Berhan Selassie Church, known for its ceiling of angelic faces.
Take a scenic drive to Buhit Ras, part of the dramatic Simien Mountains National Park, known as the “Roof of Africa.” Trek through highland landscapes featuring endemic wildlife and panoramic views. After exploring the park, return to Gondar for the night.
In the morning, fly to the sacred town of Lalibela, often called “Africa’s Petra.” Visit the first group of the town’s UNESCO-listed rock-hewn churches, including Bete Medhane Alem, Bete Mariam, and the iconic Bete Giorgis. In the evening, join thousands of pilgrims for the Christmas Eve ceremony at Bete Mariam Church, where priests chant and pray throughout the night, leading up to a midnight candlelight service marking the birth of Christ.
Wake up to the sunrise ceremony of Genna (Ethiopian Christmas). High above the church, a long line of priests performs King David’s Dance, swaying to the rhythm of drums and rattles. In the courtyard below, another group of priests chants in response, symbolizing the unity between heaven and earth. The intense, spiritual celebration lasts for hours and is considered one of the most profound expressions of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity.
Today, take a scenic excursion to Genete Mariam, a rare church carved into pink-tinged volcanic rock on a remote hilltop. Unlike most churches in Lalibela, it stands above ground and features strong architectural details. The journey offers stunning views of the Ethiopian highlands and insights into rural village life.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner party hosted by Extraordinary Ethiopia Tours, complete with traditional buffet, music, and a coffee ceremony. Later, transfer to the airport for your international departure.
