Itinerary
The tour begins with a warm reception at the airport or preferred hotel. Morning arrivals may begin the journey the same day, while afternoon or evening arrivals will start fresh the following morning. Airport pickup and all transfers are included.
Drive east to Awash National Park, a striking expanse of acacia plains and dramatic gorges bisected by the Awash River. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided birdwatching excursion around the lodge, framing your experience with a scenic sunset view over the cascading falls.
Target Species: Some special sightings may include Abyssinian Roller, White-bellied Go-away-bird, and Yellow-billed Kite, among regional specialties.
Spend the full day exploring the Ilala–Sala plain, the river waterfalls, and the surrounding acacia thickets. Highlights may include the Grey Hornbill, Somali Fiscal Shrike, Helmeted Guineafowl, and the towering Kori Bustard.
Drive southwest to Bishangari Lodge, nestled within the forest on Lake Langano’s edge. Spend the afternoon walking the riverside paths amid forest canopy and water’s edge—searching for forest birds such as the Yellow-fronted Parrot, White-cheeked Turaco, Orange-bellied Parrot, African Paradise Flycatcher, and the comical Bare-faced Go-away-bird.
Transfer to Wondo Genet, an area known for forested slopes and cooler climes. Hike in the surrounding canopy trails, accompanied by your expert guide, as you track endemic and elusive forest species—most notably the Yellow-fronted Parrot and other regional forest dwellers.
Drive to Yirgalem and settle into Aregash Lodge, a retreat surrounded by coffee farms and indigenous forests. Over the afternoon, spot highland species like Great Sparrowhawk, Tambourine Dove, and Mountain Thrush—all thriving in this biodiverse corridor.
Continue to Awassa, a shimmering Rift Valley lake with abundant waterbirds. Explore the shoreline and market area to watch White-backed Ducks, African Pygmy Geese, and Banded Barbets; further birding includes pelicans, cormorants, and more.
En route back to Addis Ababa, stop at Abijatta–Shalla National Park—famous for its flamingo flocks and waterbird diversity. Once in the capital, enjoy leisure time for souvenirs or urban exploration. In the evening, gather for a heartfelt farewell dinner featuring traditional music, dance performances, and a ceremonial coffee offering. Transfer to the airport for your final departure.
