Itinerary
Extraordinary Ethiopia Tours welcomes guests arriving at any time at Bole International Airport. Morning arrivals can begin their itinerary immediately, while those arriving in the afternoon or evening will start the following day.
Your journey begins with a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Gondar, the historical city of castles. Upon arrival, you’ll be met by your guide and transferred to Debark, the park headquarters of Simien Mountains National Park. After obtaining the necessary permits and meeting your scout, drive deeper into the park to start your first trek. Today’s introductory hike along the escarpment offers breathtaking views of the plains below and is an excellent opportunity to spot large troops of Gelada baboons, a species found only in Ethiopia.
After breakfast, continue your trek along the northern escarpment into the Kaba Valley, crossing dramatic ridgelines and reaching the Gich Abyss, where the Jinbar River plunges over 500 meters into a vast canyon. You’ll enjoy a scenic picnic lunch by the river, then trek through fields of barley en route to the village of Gich, where you’ll witness a traditional coffee ceremony with local villagers. In the late afternoon, take a short hike up to Kedadit for a stunning sunset view before returning to your camp. The area is a great place to spot the Lammergeyer (bearded vulture) and thick-billed ravens soaring over the cliffs.
Today’s hike is the most scenic of the trip. Begin the day trekking through giant Lobelia fields before arriving at Imet Gogo (3,926 m), a breathtaking viewpoint with 360° views over the highland plateaus and valleys far below. The trail continues along dramatic cliffs and into the Jinbahir River Valley, offering a different perspective of the volcanic terrain. After ascending to a summit at 4,070 m, stop for lunch with panoramic views before descending to Chennek Camp. In the late afternoon, relax and enjoy the open skies or look out for Walia ibex, Ethiopia’s iconic mountain goat, which often roam near the camp’s cliffs.
Begin your day early with a final ascent to Buwahit Peak (4,430 m), the second highest mountain in Ethiopia. The trail is challenging but immensely rewarding, with chances to spot Walia ibex, rock hyraxes, raptors, and—if lucky—the rare Ethiopian wolf. From the summit, enjoy sweeping views across the Simien escarpments. After your descent, return to Chennek Camp for lunch, then drive through the park back to Gondar. You’ll catch your late afternoon flight to Addis Ababa, arriving in time for your evening connections or overnight stay.
