Itinerary
Upon arrival at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, clients are greeted by the Extraordinary Ethiopia Tours team, regardless of flight time. Morning arrivals may begin their tour immediately after hotel check-in, while afternoon or evening arrivals will commence their tour the next day. A morning flight takes you to Semera, the capital of the Afar region, where you’ll be met by expert drivers with air-conditioned 4WD vehicles. Accompanied by a full expedition team—including a professional cook, local guide, tourism authorities, and a police escort—you’ll depart directly for Hamedela, near the Dallol region. In the late afternoon, enjoy a sunset over the salt-rich Lake Assale. Overnight is spent in open-air camping, equipped with clean mattresses, pillows, bed sheets, and ample drinking water (6 liters per person/day).
Start the day early, before sunrise, with a drive to the incredible geothermal fields of Dallol. Witness otherworldly landscapes formed by live chemical reactions—vivid yellows, greens, and reds create a surreal visual experience. Continue to a nearby salt-and-mud cave beneath the Dallol crater, followed by a picnic breakfast near the site. Afterward, explore the vast salt plains and Lake Karum, where you can take a dip in a natural saltwater pool despite the intense heat. Meet and observe local Afar salt miners as they work in traditional caravans. After lunch and some rest in Hamedela, the journey continues to Erta Ale, Ethiopia’s most famous active volcano. Reach the base camp near the caldera and hike approximately 30 minutes to the summit for a close-up view of the active lava lake—an awe-inspiring sight. Return to the camp for an overnight stay under the stars. Open-air camping includes clean sleeping gear and a quiet, flat resting area.
Wake up with the sunrise and enjoy a hearty breakfast before heading to Afdera, a salt-mining town located 102 meters below sea level. Known for its searing heat and economic significance, Afdera offers a chance to walk along the salt lake and explore nearby salt farms. After lunch in town and a final glimpse of this fascinating region, return to Semera for your flight back to Addis Ababa in the late afternoon.
