Overview
Travel to one of Ethiopia’s most iconic and spiritually significant destinations on this 2-day tour to Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s most remarkable religious landmarks. Often called the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” Lalibela is home to 11 medieval churches carved entirely from solid rock—each a masterpiece of engineering, devotion, and cultural heritage.
This short but enriching tour takes you deep into Ethiopia’s Christian traditions and medieval history. You’ll explore the famous churches of King Lalibela, walk through ancient tunnels and passageways, and experience the spiritual atmosphere of this sacred site. With expert local guides, comfortable accommodation, and round-trip flights from Addis Ababa, this tour is perfect for history lovers, cultural travelers, and anyone with limited time who doesn’t want to miss Ethiopia’s crown jewel.
Itinerary
Extraordinary Ethiopia Tours will meet all clients arriving at Bole International Airport, regardless of arrival time. For morning arrivals, your tour may begin the same day. For afternoon or evening arrivals, we recommend an overnight in Addis Ababa before your early morning flight to Lalibela the next day. Hotel bookings and airport transfers can be arranged upon request.
Early in the morning, you’ll take a domestic flight from Addis Ababa to Lalibela. Upon arrival, meet your local guide and transfer to your hotel. After check-in and a short rest, begin your guided tour of the northern cluster of Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches, including the majestic Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, and Bet Meskel, all connected by tunnels and passageways carved from solid rock. After lunch at a local restaurant, continue exploring more churches before returning to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, visit the southern cluster of churches, concluding with the iconic Bet Giyorgis (St. George), Ethiopia’s most famous rock-hewn church, shaped like a perfect cross and carved into the earth. Depending on time and interest, enjoy a visit to a traditional Tej house (local honey wine bar) or local market. In the afternoon, transfer to the airport for your return flight to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, enjoy a farewell Ethiopian cultural dinner and traditional coffee ceremony before your international departure or transfer to your hotel.
