This immersive 13-day adventure spans Ethiopia’s cultural and geographic diversity—from the historic sites of the northern highlands, such as Lalibela and the Simien Mountains, to the colorful tribal life in the Omo Valley. Begin in Addis Ababa and journey through the monastic islands of Lake Tana and imperial Gondar, trek among the churches of Lalibela, then venture to the Rift Valley and delve into tribal communities, wildlife, and stunning landscapes in the Omo region. Itinerary
Your Extraordinary Ethiopia Tours team will warmly welcome you upon arrival. Morning arrivals may begin sightseeing after check‑in; afternoon or evening arrivals start the next day.
After arrival and hotel check‑in, begin your city tour with a panoramic drive up Mount Entoto, followed by visits to Merkato, The National Museum (home of Lucy), and the Ethnographic Museum, housed in Haile Selassie’s former palace.
Fly to Bahir Dar, then embark on a boat tour of Lake Tana to explore island monasteries. In the afternoon, visit Bezawit Hill, the former Haile Selassie palace, then take a short hike to the spectacular Blue Nile Falls, ending with a sunset over the lake.
Journey north to Gondar, passing through scenic highlands. Explore the Royal Enclosure, Fasilidas’s Pool, Debre Birhan Selassie Church, and Kuskuam Palace, all rich with Ethiopian imperial history.
Fly to Lalibela, then tour the northwestern cluster of its underground churches—carved from solid rock and including Bete Medhane Alem, Bete Maryam, Bete Meskel, Bete Danaghel, Bete Golgotha, and Bete Mikael.
Visit the southern cluster of Lalibela’s churches—Bete Gabriel‑Rufael, Bete Merkorios, Bete Amanuel, and Bete Aba Libanos—ending with a visit to Bete Giyorgis. After lunch, make a trip to Yimrehanna Kristos, an exquisite stone-and-wood church built inside a cavern.
Fly back to Addis Ababa and proceed south through the Great Rift Valley. Visit Lake Ziway, and unwind at Wondo Genet in hot springs and lush gardens.
Begin your day at Lake Awassa’s lively fish market, then drive to Arba Minch, stopping to visit the Dorze people and their distinctive beehive houses and weaving traditions.
Take a boat trip on Lake Chamo to see hippos and the "crocodile market." Then travel through vibrant market towns like Weyto and Key Afar as you head to Jinka.
Explore the Mursi community in Mago National Park, known for their lip plates, then return to Jinka and visit the South Omo Museum & Research Center, with opportunities to engage in local market life.
Travel to Turmi, visiting Dimeka market, a bustling hub for multiple tribes. In the evening, witness the traditional Evangadi (night dance) of the Hamer people.
Embark on a day trip to visit Karo villages along the Omo River, known for their elaborate body decorations and ceremonial customs.
Travel through Erbore (market days permitting) to reach Konso, celebrated for terraced agriculture and totemic spirit gates, then continue to Arba Minch.
